Modern braking systems consist of front and rear brake pads or shoes in conjunction with brake discs or brake drums to convert the kinetic energy by friction and slow the car. In disc and drum brake applications, there are usually two brake pads or brake shoes per brake disc or drum.
In brake discs applications the pads are held in place by a calliper affixed to a wheel hub or suspension upright. When the brakes are hydraulically applied, the caliper clamps or squeezes the two pads together into the spinning disc to slow/stop the vehicle.
In drum brake applications the brake shoes are housed inside the drum and operated via a wheel cylinder. When the brakes are hydraulically applied, the wheel cylinder pushes the shoes outwards against the inside of the spinning drum to slow/stop the vehicle.
